PRECIS WRITING

Brevity is the soul of wit. In fact comprehension is the first step towards Precis Writing. But apart from reading comprehension skills it requires the skill for concise restatement of original passage expressed clearly, free from all ambiguities & redundancies. Without reading the original, one should be able to get the main message through the Precis which should be a coherent piece of writing presenting the argument logically rather than having an organic whole which loses its meaning if truncated in a patched up fashion.

The word Precise is derived from French and it means ‘exact’ or ‘terse’. It is pronounced ‘Pray-see’ and the plural spelling is pronounced as ‘Pray-seez’. A Precis may be defined as restatement in shortened form of the main ideas and points in a piece of writing. There is no fixed rule about the length of a Precis but ordinarily it should contain one-third of the number of words in original Passage. Precis Writing is neither a paraphrase of the original passage nor a list of its main points rather is the ability for condensed reproduction of text, is useful for learning in the academic world and for performing one’s duties in the professional world.

Its rigour has no place for examples, illustrations and literary frills used by the writer of the original to emphasis his point, instead, must re express by Generalisation, substitution of a single word, phrase for a phrase, sentence or a clause respectively and  by removing superfluous, ornamental words.
